The costs of moving can add up fast. There are always unexpected costs as well as the costs of having to start over in a new home. If you’re trying to move but also stay on budget there are some things that you can do to save money without making your move more difficult. Use these tips from savvy movers to save money during your next move:

Pack A Cooler

During the actual move things will be very hectic. Since you will be transitioning from one home to another you won’t be able to cook, and all of your non-perishable food will be packed. Relying on fast food or restaurant food can get quite expensive if you’re eating out for three meals a day with your family. Eating out every meal isn’t particularly healthy either, and it can take up a lot of time. To save money and time pack a cooler before the move begins with sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, and drinks and have pre-portioned non-perishable snacks ready to go for the kids.

Make Your Own Packing Material

Instead of spending money on packing material to protect your dishes, glassware, and breakable knick knacks use your soft items like clothing, towels, and blankets to protect your valuables. Using your existing items to pack breakable items will also make packing go a lot faster which will save you time. And you won’t have a lot of packing paper that has be cleaned up at the end of your move when you use the soft fabric items you already have as packing material. Just make sure that you leave out enough clothing and towels and blankets for your family to use before using the rest as packing materials.

Spend Money Where It Counts

There are some things that are worth spending money on when you move. The trick to moving on a budget is knowing where to spend your money and where to save. Save on packing materials and other items, but don’t skimp on the quality of the boxes that you use. If you don’t use sturdy boxes your items could be damaged or if the boxes rip or break you could end up having to repack everything. It makes sense to spend money on high quality boxes and tape. It also makes sense to spend money on hiring labor to load and unload the truck for you because professional movers will get the job done fast and efficiently. Don’t be afraid to spend money where it makes sense to spend it.

Don’t Rush To Decorate Your New Home

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they move is rushing out to buy new furniture or décor items for their new home. Often six months later they don’t want that furniture or décor theme anymore. Before you spend a fortune on new items for your new home take the time to get to know the new place and think about what items would work best in that space. Use your old furniture and décor items until you have been in the new home long enough to get a sense of the place and what style and décor fit the new home.
