There’s a reason why most people move during the summer. It’s because that’s usually when the weather is sunny and clear and that makes moving a lot easier. But summers have been getting warmer every year and those increasing temperatures bring some challenging conditions for a move. It doesn’t matter if you’re moving locally or across the country use these tips to make your summer move comfortable and safe:
Load During The Coolest Times Of The Day
The summer temperatures can rise fast during the day so the best times to load and unload boxes are early in the morning or in the evening after the sun has gone down. Do the bulk of the loading and unloading either early in the morning or later in the evening to lower the risk of heat stroke or heat related illness. If you’re hiring movers make sure all your furniture and boxes are ready to go right when they arrive so that they can start loading while the temperatures are still low enough to be comfortable.
Stay Hydrated
You will be running in and out of the house, packing, loading, and doing other things all day long on moving day and you need to make sure that you’re drinking enough water. You should be drinking at least one glass of water every hour. To remind yourself to drink and make it convenient set up a water station outside with a cooler filled with ice, water, and soft drinks so there’s always some cold water available.
Keep Pets Cool And Out Of The Way
If you’re moving with pets they should be crated while the truck is being loaded, but they also need to be kept cool and comfortable. If you have them crated put the crates in a shady spot outdoors and make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink. Or, if you have the air conditioner running in the house you are leaving you can empty one and put the pet crates, food, and plenty of water in that room. Leave the pets closed in that room while your boxes and furniture are packed and loaded.
Plan Ahead
If you’re moving to a new home in the same city make a trip over to your new home and turn on the air conditioner so that the house or apartment will be cool when you and your pets get there. If you’re moving out of state ask the landlord to go into the apartment and turn the air on for you so that you’re arriving to a nice cool home.
